I see my mixed media artworks as psychological and biological specimen; a personal and universal mix of allusions, hurdles, and reflection. While the work speaks a language of idiosyncratic marks, I pay homage to the ambiguous spaces and biomorphic vision of American painter, Terry Winters. Fusing together organic forms, experimenting with the painted surface and building up layers of over-painting has become a launching point for my creativity as an artist.

Hilesh Patel

I utilize text and lettering and figure-based imagery with mediums such as oils, watercolor, ink, wood, metal and paper. After going through chemotherapy in 2004 I experienced long term neuropathy in my hands, forcing me to revisit a personal and artistic history with aerosol (and graffiti) as a viable and alternative artmaking tool. Since then I have integrated tagging, stenciling and public political statements into my body of work. Text, Hinduism, Animism and politics are intertwined with instincts, language and emotion surfacing in the most unexpected ways.

My work can contain specific inferences evident in a series of paintings and public displays of the Hindu god Ganesh in different personas or be more general in a display of silhouettes with text or animals escaping from orifices.

"Freak Dog" is inspired by my day job as a groomer. Working with dogs all day, you'll find that they each have their own silly little personalities. "Freak Dog" is my exaggerated version of what our pets can be. My admiration for comic book art and the fantasy of it plays a role in my smaller pieces. I love to take advantage of the ability to let my thoughts wander.

Fletcher Hayes  www.fletcherhayes.com

Fletcher Hayes is an artist who exhibits locally in Chicago and
across the nation. His lively and colorful abstract oil paintings
tend to bring the viewer to the edge of recognition, but they stop
short of becoming representative of anything that the viewer actually
knows. In that aspect, they complement Hayes’s preoccupation in his
realistic artwork — exploring the space between truth and untruth.

Hayes says, “My artwork represents marvelous moments — both real and
imaginary — juxtaposing events as I see fit. It tells how an
unexpected event has the power to transform an ordinary day into a
historic moment in time.

“Truth is only as accurate as the observer’s memory and level of
comprehension will allow. No two individuals will recount an event
the same way. An important story will live on after the witnesses
have departed. Each time it is told, it will be embellished and
polished until it reaches heroic proportions.

“My goal as an artist is to bring to life a moment in time, described
in vivid detail, in order that it might stand on its own legs. It is
art that explores the place where truth and lies meet.”

In my art, I reinterpret the ancient form of mosaics to produce works that

capture the vibrancy and inter-connectedness of contemporary urban life.

Glass serves literally as a lens to transmit and focus light, and metaphorically, as a channel through which something can be seen or understood. Both the spare beauty of the Canadian prairies where I grew up and the sensory richness of the urban environments of Chicago where I have spent most of my adult life influence my aesthetic sensibilities. Color and rhythms play off each other to explore pattern and surprise in nature and life.
